Sue A. Cowling,  Owner/Founder
Sue was born and raised in the heart of Nebraska by a single father, a high school Math teacher, who instilled, in her, the values and importance of education. She graduated from Kearney State College with degrees in Elementary Education and Specific Learning Disabilities and has experience teaching Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade levels in Nebraska, Arizona and California. She is also a former director of the Sylvan Learning Center. After teaching 2nd grade at Rio Vista Elementary in 1998, Sue began tutoring privately in her home before opening her tutoring center in 2007.
  Laurel Kalchthaler, C.A.R.E. Enrichment Director
Laurel has lived in California for 25 years. Originally from Pennsylvania, Laurel received a B.A. in Sociology from the Pennsylvania State University and an M.S. in Education from Duquesne University. Over the years she has taught middle grades and high school study skills, social studies, history, creative writing, and values education, and authored a teacher’s manual. Additionally, she designed, developed, and implemented curriculum. Here at SCV tutors, Laurel serves as a tutor, teaches Character Building and coordinates the Reaching Out portion of the C.A.R.E. program.
 
Annette Salsburey, Education Director
Mrs. Annette has twenty years of teaching experience with students of all ages and abilities.  She currently holds certification in elementary education in both California and Michigan.  Mrs. Annette is married to Dr. Larry Salsburey, who is a chaplain with Vitas Hospice.  Spending time with her three grandsons is her favorite pastime.  Hobbies include reading, gardening, taking walks, and cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

   Ryan Yukio Lau, Internship Program Coordinator and Teacher
Ryan attended the University of California, San Diego and graduated with a major in Bioengineering and a minor in Economics.  He has been involved with volunteer work since high school.  He specializes in mentoring young adults and will provide internship training and advice on how to prepare for college to our older students.  He is also an excellent tutor and is involved in the tutoring program as well.  He also loves preparing students for SAT’s and helping with study skills.

  Elmarie Hyman, C.A.R.E. Homeschool Academy Coordinator and Teacher for C.A.R.E. Private and Homeschool AcademiesElmarie Hyman has more than 11 years experience as an educator.  She has taught her own 4 children (currently ranging in age from 3rd grade to high school), as well as group classes for homeschoolers and after school enrichment classes for public school students. She also has experience tutoring and has been a speaker at various homeschool seminars and conventions.  She has been the coordinator of various homeschool co-ops and support groups, organizing numerous fieldtrips and other homeschool events as well.  Before she started teaching, she obtained a degree in Accounting and worked as an accountant and auditor for years. She has a passion for education, and strives to accomplish that goal through means that go way beyond the textbook.  She loves using projects, games, and hands-on learning while teaching, which is evident in the Where’s the Money curriculum she developed for teaching Economics, Personal Finance, and Entrepreneurship, as well as the classes that she offers.
  Elizabeth Johnson, Teacher for C.A.R.E. Private and Homeschool AcademiesElizabeth Johnson graduated from Harvard with a major in Psychology and a minor in Art.  She is currently an educational consultant, focusing on students in grades K-12, from special needs to gifted and everyone in between, helping motivated and energetic clients who want to take ownership of their lives in the following ways:

  • tutoring,
  • one on one mentoring,
  • custom classes,
  • online classes,
  • seminars,
  • published articles,
  • public speaking.

Her classes focus on experiential, activity-rich, project-based, Socratic learning, utilizing motivation, learning styles, and goal structuring and accomplishment.  With an extensive background in achieving academic and creative excellence, Mrs. Johnson is results oriented: developing communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and relationship skills; she helps clients understand how they interface with the world. She is an excellent Science and Art instructor, with years of animal training on her resume as well. Integrated into worldwide projects, Elizabeth’s international reach extends to clients in London, St Maartin and Paris. Fluent in French, she and her family currently reside in Los Angeles, CA.  Mrs Johnson has appeared on internet teleconferences, in newspapers  on the radio, and speaking at conventions . She is a regularly featured expert for the Examiner, the Right Side of the Curve.com, and the Parent Times magazine, She was featured in Women’s Day magazine (12/08)
