Our Amazing Staff

Sue A. Cowling,  Owner/Founder
Sue was born and raised in the heart of Nebraska by a single father, a high school Math teacher, who instilled, in her, the values and importance of education. She graduated from Kearney State College with degrees in Elementary Education and Specific Learning Disabilities and has experience teaching Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade levels in Nebraska, Arizona and California. She is also a former director of the Sylvan Learning Center. After teaching 2nd grade at Rio Vista Elementary in 1998, Sue began tutoring privately in her home before opening her tutoring center in 2007.
  Laurel Kalchthaler, C.A.R.E. Enrichment Director
Laurel has lived in California for 25 years. Originally from Pennsylvania, Laurel received a B.A. in Sociology from the Pennsylvania State University and an M.S. in Education from Duquesne University. Over the years she has taught middle grades and high school study skills, social studies, history, creative writing, and values education, and authored a teacher’s manual. Additionally, she designed, developed, and implemented curriculum. Here at SCV tutors, Laurel serves as a tutor, teaches Character Building and coordinates the Reaching Out portion of the C.A.R.E. program.
 

.Annette Salsburey, Education Director
Mrs. Annette has twenty years of teaching experience with students of all ages and abilities.  She currently holds certification in elementary education in both California and Michigan.  Mrs. Annette is married to Dr. Larry Salsburey, who is a chaplain with Vitas Hospice.  Spending time with her three grandsons is her favorite pastime.  Hobbies include reading, gardening, taking walks, and cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Alice T. Wilson C.A.R.E. Tutoring Program Administrator
Alice is an education professional with over 13-years experience. She has worked in elementary classrooms, as well as for several tutoring franchises. Alice holds an Associate degree in Child Development, as well as a Master’s degree in secondary teaching … both of which she took with high honors and distinctions. She has realized many accomplishments: One, she maintained a status of #1 when directing a child development center during her tenure (out of 25 centers in the organization). Second, she is an SAT Preparation specialist that has seen her students’ scores improve by an average of 240 points!
  Andrea Johnson, C.A.R.E. Writing Director
Andrea Johnson is a California Credentialed teacher with experience in teaching composition, literature, and communication courses. She obtained her B.A. in English Education from Millikin University and has since collected a wide variety of experience in education. Her experiences include teaching ESL to adults and high school students in the Dominican Republic, leading Pre-kindergartners in basic Spanish and phonetic skills, to instructing 7th- 11th grade level English classes in Illinois and Georgia. She has also helped to develop and implement curriculums for schools and community groups

Mark Fadriquela, Math Specialist
